Excavation pricing is hard to pin down because no two sites are the same β but here's a realistic picture of what jobs cost around Guelph and Wellington County, and what moves the number.
These are ballparks. A firm quote always comes after someone sees the site.
Access is huge β can a machine get to the work, or does everything route through a narrow side yard? Soil and ground conditions matter: the clay and aggregate common around Puslinch and the rural townships dig differently than soft loam, and hitting rock or a high water table changes everything. Spoil removal (hauling away the dug-out earth) and disposal fees add up fast. And utility locates β required on every job β can reveal lines that force hand-digging.
A lot of work out here involves septic systems, wells, ponds, and drainage on rural acreages. These jobs need an excavator who understands setbacks, won't disturb a well, and knows the local permitting. It's a different skill set than a city backyard dig.
Before any digging, underground utilities must be located (it's free through Ontario One Call and legally required). A contractor who shrugs this off is a contractor who'll eventually hit a gas line. Always confirm locates are arranged.
Have your project details ready β what you're digging, rough dimensions, and site access β and expect a good contractor to want to walk the site before committing to a price. Fixed written quotes after a site visit beat a number quoted over the phone.
